The American professional basketball player André Tyler Iguodala was born on January 28, 1984. He is currently playing for the Golden State Warriors of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Iguodala told StrongerTeam.com that he works on his ball-handling and off-hand dribbling during his early morning workouts during the offseason according to USA Basketball’s website. There follows a “comprehensive stretching series,” followed by 90 minutes of “game-like” shooting practice, which requires at least 500 shots to be made.
Afterward, it’s time for weight training! Weightlifting is his main exercise four or five times a week, alternately focusing on the legs and core and the upper body. It is known by Iguodala that exercises that strengthen the core help to prevent injuries as well as improve balance and strength.

At the halfway point of his 14th season in the NBA, the veteran from Springfield, Illinois, is finding the balance between what he needs to fuel his performance on the court and what he needs to fuel his life off the court.
Iguodala ate trash when he was a kid, just like many others. He wouldn’t eat literal garbage, but foods loaded with preservatives and pesticides instead. As he was growing older, and as he became wealthier, he did his own research on the types of food that worked best for him.
“I don’t think I can be [vegan] right now. I’ll lose too much weight.”
Food groups that Iggy eats are fruits, vegetables, and starches, with key proteins sprinkled throughout. Unlike many of his peers, he is not 100% vegan, but he believes he approaches that level.
Iguodala says that once he isn’t worried about defending LeBron James, he might go all the way.
“When I retire. I don’t think I can be [vegan] right now. I’ll lose too much weight,” he responded when asked if he would ever switch to a completely plant-based diet. “I did it last year and I lost a ton of weight. I lost like 15 pounds.”
“Then I had to go in the Finals and then people didn’t wanna call fouls on LeBron to help me in the post,” he laughs. “Nah, I just needed my strength, so I had to put the weight back on so I could get it back.”
In the background, Iguodala’s teammate JaVale McGee is fleeing the scene in a black outfit and red sneakers. In addition to the 7’0 center, there are many NBA players who have recently embraced a vegan or vegetarian diet. His weight used to be 270 pounds, but he has lost 15 since making the transition to a fully vegan diet two summers ago.
“When I go vegan, I lose weight, and I like staying at a certain weight,” McGee explains. “So that’s really the reason I do it.”
McGee’s well-than-normal energy level is indirectly boosted by the plant-based diet, even though Iguodala loses some much-needed muscle mass and strength when he goes vegan.
“I’m already a hyper person, so I didn’t really feel my energy go up,” he reported. “But I definitely feel leaner and lighter, and I guess that, in turn, can turn into energy because I’m a real springy and fast player.”
In a similar manner, Al Jefferson lost 40 pounds by becoming a vegetarian. During the summer of 2009, Damian Lillard became vegan and lost weight from 200 pounds to 190 pounds. In the course of following a “mostly vegan” diet, Jahlil Okafor lost 20 pounds.
While Kyrie Irving is preparing to run for the MVP award in Boston, he credits his vegan diet for a boost in energy.
But Iguodala trusts his gut
The solution is simple for Iguodala: he listens to his body and stays away from what he doesn’t think is right. Using that as a barometer for deciding what he is supposed to eat or not is crucial. There are some foods that make him feel sluggish. He does not get that feeling from fruit and vegetables.
“I love burgers,” he replied. “Like, I like burgers. Like that’s one of my favorite things. [But] If I eat a burger, like 20 minutes later I’m like it’s over, I gotta go to the bathroom. If you don’t eat vegetables and then all you eat is vegetables for like three or four years, your stomach’s not gonna be messed up.”
“You’re gonna feel fine. So when you eat something and you feel messed up, you know you’re not supposed to have that.”
There’s one thing Iguodala knows for sure: he doesn’t have all the answers. Despite the shelves filled with books on health and nutrition, and the research he does on the food he consumes, it appears that he is committed to learning more about nutrition and health.
However, he plans to convert to veganism in the near future, even if he won’t go all the way just yet.
“We’re athletes, so we do have to have some type of protein, so you’ve gotta figure that out as well,” he continued. “So I’m not 100 percent vegan, but I’m close, just because I’m trying to figure out about the proteins. I’m still doing more and more research as I get older.”
“But I’ve got a good system set up. It costs a good amount of money, but it’s worth it. Not just for basketball but just for me.”
It is common for NBA players to get up early in the morning. The majority of people wake up at 5 a.m. which is quite extreme, while others prefer a more reasonable time, waking up at 7 a.m. If that is the case with you, you will probably follow the second option. So we might see you rocking the chef’s whites one day?
I really like food and cooking. One of my favorite shows is Chopped. And I can cook. When I get done playing, and if my son grows up to be a professional athlete, I want to be his chef. I know what it takes because I have a chef now.
Do you have a signature dish that you cook? Didn’t you post some pictures last year of you doing work on the grill?
Yeah, I got this barbecue chicken recipe from a friend of mine. We use mustard and garlic salt, and marinate the chicken in that. Then we put it on the grill, cook it up.
Do you ask your chef to fix anything in particular for you?
No, I give him free rein to do whatever. I told him, Cook whatever you want, as long as it’s healthy and as long as it’s organic. I try to eat red meat just once a week. I mean, I like steak, so he can fix that. But mostly I try to stick to just chicken, turkey, fish, and of course a lot of vegetables. It’s funny because some of my friends don’t really try to eat healthily, but they’ll come over and eat my chef’s food and they tear it apart.
Have you always liked vegetables, even as a kid?
Well, I was weird as a child. I would eat broccoli raw. I would eat cauliflower raw. I also used to love salads. So, yeah, I’ve always liked vegetables.
Has eating healthy always been important to you?
In college, we had no money. So we would eat well while we were at school, at the training table in the cafeteria, but the rest of the time I’d just eat whatever. Once I got to the NBA, I had to buckle down. I sort of got it in my head early on, because I saw some players who’d only been in the League for a couple of years who wouldn’t watch what they were eating and they were gaining weight. So I got strict.
Are you an adventurous eater when you go out and eat?
Oh yeah, I’ll eat anything. Well, during the season I won’t. During the season I stick to my diet. During the offseason, I’ll venture away from it.
Any superstitions about what you eat before games?
Not really. I usually choose to eat chicken or fish, maybe with mashed potatoes or vegetables. And now I have a catering service that brings me wraps. I just don’t want to get too full.
