“Professional athleticism is in my DNA,” the “Live Like You Were Dying” the singer explains, adding that it now shows in his workout regimen, especially when he’s on tour. During the first 30 minutes of the day McGraw starts with “a lot of stretching, a bit of yoga, maybe some body-weight exercises,” and then he goes for a 30-minute treadmill power walk. Afterward, McGraw and his band will sneak in a workout at the concert venue for the following night.

“We’ll run the stadium stairs, the arena stairs, or the grass on an amphitheater,” McGraw adds. “We’ll do bear crawls and all kinds of stuff for about an hour.”

As if one intense workout isn’t enough, McGraw’s crew will have battle ropes, sledgehammers, tractor tires, and kettlebells stored in the gym trailer that travels with them on tour added to the pre-concert workout. “We’ll do two hours of functional fitness,” McGaw asserts.

Despite the fact that some people might think McGraw is crazy for working out so intensely before performing a two-hour performance, McGraw believes his new routine has contributed to his best performances.

On the days we don’t have those opportunities, our shows aren’t as good,” he confesses. He says that if he can find his groove, “boy, those are special nights,” he adds.

When he doesn’t have too much time for a workout, McGraw typically does this routine:

  • Warm-up: three sets of 20 jumping jacks with a 30-second rest between each set
  • Pushups. Advanced move: rotate to side plank between pushups (as many as practicable)
  • Squats (as many as possible)
  • Sit-ups. Advanced move: V-ups (as many as possible).

These movements are done for 40 seconds each, followed by a 20-second break.

Having been an athlete all his life, Mr. McGraw became enthused about fitness seven years ago. “You creep into this older metabolism,” he said. “It was that period in the middle where I didn’t work out as much as I should and ate more than I should.” And then there’s the question of endurance. “I’m 48 years old. I don’t want to not be able to go up there and do a two-hour high-energy show,” he replied.

He travels with a trailer that can be used as a portable gym while on tour. This set of equipment includes battle ropes, chains weighing 20 pounds, exercise balls, a tractor tire, dumbbells, sledgehammers, and attachable weights.

The only clothes he wears are gray cotton shorts and tennis shoes. “For the shoot, I put a T-shirt on, because I didn’t want to be running around half-naked,” he explained.

The Workout

Whenever he is on tour, Mr. McGraw starts his day at 11 a.m. He runs up and down a hill while carrying a 40-pound weight on his ankles. Taking a break at 2:15, he and up to a dozen others (band members, security, crew members) begin working through 12 circuits of CrossFit exercises. The exercises include throwing sledgehammers at the tractor tire, slamming battle ropes on the ground while squatting, and pulverizing yourself with the difficult “Manmaker” exercise that combines a burpee lift with dumbbell lifts.

“I have a guy that’s taught me a lot, who I work with once or twice a year: Roger Yuan. And he does a combination of CrossFit, weight training, martial arts, and yoga.”

The Diet

On tour, I try three to four days a week to really watch what I eat,” he added. “But I like cheeseburgers, I like pizza, I like pasta.” When he prepares for a film shoot, a photoshoot, or an awards show, he shifts his diet to the following: a breakfast of oatmeal with dried cherries, walnuts, and pure Canadian maple syrup, followed by a midmorning protein shake; lunch is avocado with tuna, apples, walnuts, eggs, and some chiles, followed by an afternoon protein shake; dinner is a grilled chicken breast with polenta or half a sweet potato and spinach, asparagus or steamed broccoli. “And right before I go to bed, I have some yogurt with granola on top.”

A mixed martial arts fitness program and a water resistance workout developed by Mr. Yuan are also used by Mr. McGraw, whose terms he describes as “CrossFit meets martial arts in the pool.” Mrs. Hill also works in the water with him. “She doesn’t have to work out, though,” Mr. McGraw remarked. “She looks good no matter what she does.”

Diet should also include plenty of healthy fats. Coconut oil, grass-fed butter, olive oil, and avocados are your best options.

Tell us about your new partnership with Snap Fitness. What are you working on?

I’ve always been involved in fitness. I’ve always tried to take care of myself. For a while, I went a little slack—you get busy in your life and have kids, and you’re running and gunning all the time. You sort of put it on the back burner.

About seven or eight years ago I really got back into it and tried to get my health back together as I wanted it. When I really got serious about fitness, I thought it would be a cool world to be in. The biggest impact I could have was with people who already knew what they were doing. Snap shared the same passions that I had, and the space that they had and the way that they handled their space was something that was really appealing to me.

Why is staying fit important to you?

In my early 40s, when I really started taking it seriously, I started running a lot. That’s the first thing I started doing, and I found that made a big difference for me. It just started my day out better. I just realized how much it raised the bar on everything that I did. It raised the bar on my career. It raised the bar on my relationships with my friends. It just made me feel better, gave me a better mental outlook on everything that I was doing.

Would you say it gave you an openness to new experiences?

Absolutely. It gives you confidence in yourself as well. It became a discipline for me, and it allowed me to become more disciplined in all the other things that I did, including learning to fly an airplane and spearfishing with my friends in the Bahamas. Just different things that being fit and being mentally alert led me to do.

How are you involved in the collaboration with Snap?

We’ll go through and figure out the right equipment that feels right for the kinds of workouts that we want to do. I’m designing the Signature Club—it’s like a Snap Club, with different touches to it that I’ll be involved in. Roger Yuan, who’s been my trainer for probably five or six years now, will also be working with me to design some concepts and some different workouts that really can be beneficial to people in a functional way.

What’s your workout schedule like on tour?

We start in the morning, and I always start all of my workouts with a 30-minute walk on the treadmill just to get everything loosened up and flowing. Then we’ll do some stretching and stuff. Typically in the mornings, it’s more of active yoga and bodyweights. Then we go in and run stairs in the arena.

We do a big CrossFit training session in the afternoon that usually goes from an hour to an hour and a half. It depends on how everybody holds up. It starts with 10 or 15 people; it ends with four or five sometimes. That’s our afternoon workout. Then we go get showered up and have dinner and get ready to do a show.

You and your wife [country superstar Faith Hill] are on tour together. Does she do the workouts, too?

She likes to do some yoga and stretching. Roger, my trainer, is really good with martial arts and boxing, and she likes to do a lot of that stuff with him.

You’re obviously a country music icon. Are you aspiring to be seen as a fitness icon as well?

[Laughs] Gosh, as long as my kids will talk to me the older they get, I’ll be happy.

None of these things would be available without country music, so that’s where my heart lies. All this other stuff I love doing and it’s fun, but when you put it in the context of what would you want to be an iconic figure in, well, country music’s my world.

I don’t know that my body’s going to turn into Arnold or anything. [Laughs]

Not many people could be Arnold. Final question: What kind of music is on your workout playlist?

Oh my gosh. Boy, I love ’70s music, so I’ll always have ’70s rock ‘n’ roll pounding. Bruno Mars is always a good one. I’ll put on Unorthodox Jukebox when I go for a run. Anything that sort of just gets you happy, gets you moving, makes you feel good, is what works for me.
